Svalbard 2024/6

Polar bears on Svalbard are among the most iconic symbols of the Arctic. These powerful predators live in extreme conditions, roaming sea ice and coastal areas in search of their main prey – seals. They are perfectly adapted to the cold thanks to a thick layer of fat and dense fur that allows them to survive temperatures far below freezing.

On Svalbard, the polar bear is a strictly protected species, and seeing one in the wild is often the highlight of any Arctic expedition. The number of bears here exceeds the number of people, so encounters are relatively common – though they always require great caution.

Polar bears spend most of their lives alone and are excellent swimmers capable of covering long distances. However, climate change and the loss of sea ice threaten their natural habitat and hunting grounds. Still, they remain a symbol of strength, endurance, and the majestic beauty of the northern wilderness.
