The crested macaque (Macaca nigra) is an endemic primate found only in the northern part of Sulawesi and a few nearby islands. It is one of Indonesia’s most charismatic monkeys, easily recognized by its striking black coloration and the distinctive “crest” of hair on its head. The species is also known for its expressive face and characteristic “smile,” which makes it a fascinating subject for observation and photography. Crested macaques live in large social groups with complex hierarchies and frequent interactions. They are primarily herbivorous but will also eat insects or small animals. In the forests of Tangkoko, they can often be seen on the ground as well as in the treetops, where they play, forage, and care for their young. Unfortunately, they are classified as critically endangered due to habitat loss and hunting. The crested macaque has therefore become a symbol of the urgent need to protect the unique biodiversity of Sulawesi.
